CT Scan
Cone Beam scans provide detailed images of the bone and are performed to evaluate diseases of the jaw, dentition, bony structures of the face, nasal cavity and sinuses, it helps in the diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders and impacted teeth. The images produced are of three-dimensional form. They can be viewed from various points and angles. This is one of the biggest advantages of a CT scan when compared to a conventional intra-oral or panoramic radiograph.
Cone Beam scans are essential for determining the density of the jaw bones before proceeding with dental implants. The success of a dental implant relies on the fusion of the implant to the surrounding bone. CT scanning and planning software is an indispensable tool in the diagnosing of dental implant position and placement. CT scanning software allows the dentist to determine if bone quantity and quality exist and can be used to virtually place implants using the computer program prior to any surgical intervention. Thus it eliminates the possible manual placement errors and matches planning to prosthetic requirements. The use of CT scanning in complex cases helps the surgeon identify and avoid vital structures, such as the inferior alveolar nerve and the sinus. Furthermore the dentist is able to prepare a surgical template prior to the implant surgery on the basis of the image obtained through CT scan. This template acts as a guide for the insertion of the dental implants. This is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure. Hence, it is painless and quite comfortable for the patient.
